First Military Member Recognized with the "Prix Hermes"

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 3, 2013) - During a gala last Friday in Quebec City, Université Laval presented the "Prix Hermès" to Colonel Jennie Carignan, Chief of Staff for Land Force Central Area/Joint Task Force Central.

This is the first time in its 36-year history that the award has been presented to a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. Col Carignan graduated from Université Laval with a Master's in Business Administration (MBA) in 2001. The "Prix Hermès" is presented annually to graduates who, through their career or social commitment, have excelled in the field of business administration.

"I am very happy that Col Carignan is being recognized by Université Laval for her outstanding achievements," said Lieutenant-General Peter Devlin, Commander of the Canadian Army. "Throughout every step of her career, she has exemplified Canadian Army values, demonstrated exceptional commitment to her job and garnered the admiration of colleagues for her excellent leadership."

This year marks the 36th edition of the "Prix Hermès" gala. Col Carignan is one of several recipients honoured by the university's Faculty of Business Administration.

"I am truly honoured to receive this award," said Col Carignan. "I find it is amazing that the academic world took the time to recognize military careers and the contributions that the military makes to society. The MBA program I took at Université Laval gave me the foundation and information I needed to do my job. It also gave me more self confidence in my abilities."

Col Carignan enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1986. She obtained a degree in fuels and materials engineering from the Royal Military College of Canada and obtained her MBA from Université Laval in 2001. She has held numerous staff, operational and command appointments, with 5 Combat Engineer Regiment, Task Force Kandahar Engineer Regiment, 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group and Land Force Central Area/Joint Task Force Central.
