Montreal International Airport Ranked 'Second Worst'

Poll of Canada's Largest Airports Tests Traveller Temperatures

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 10, 2013) - Montreal is a beautiful, sophisticated metropolis, full of fashion, history, and culture; but if you fly there, the gateway to the city is Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport. This could set you off on the wrong foot for your vacation, according to a new poll by FlightNetwork.com ranking the nation's worst airports.

This was the third year of the survey, which measures opinions about airport improvements, pet peeves and overall service in Canada's five highest-traffic airports. While perennial 'worst airport' Toronto Pearson was overwhelmingly on top with 71.3% of respondents, Montreal Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport was chosen by 12.8% of those who weighed in. Vancouver International Airport (8.3%), Edmonton International Airport (4.0%), and Calgary International Airport (3.5%) rounded out the top (or 'bottom?') five.

"Airports are sometimes stressful environments, and the numbers say that Pierre Elliot Trudeau may be less enjoyable than others," said Naman Budhdeo, CEO of FlightNetwork.com. "The good news is that it's merely a brief stopover before heading into beautiful Montreal."

There are plenty of reasons for people to dread the lead-up to lift-off, but airports are trying; many upgrades at Canada's busiest airports this year sought to address the most-common pet peeves of travelers, identified by the poll: long lines at check-in (40.4%), delays clearing security (28.5%), long waits retrieving baggage (14.8%), lack of food and drink options (11.1%), and lack of shopping options (5.5%).

Several efforts were made to address these annoyances. Popular perks from the past year included the addition of self-serve border clearance for Canadian citizens at Toronto Pearson. Respondents also liked the influx of new dining options and tabletop iPads for food orders and flight-tracking at the Toronto hub. Vancouver's new high-speed baggage system was chosen as the best Canadian airport improvement with 27.6% of votes.

The FlightNetwork.com poll was conducted through Google Consumer Surveys. Each question received approximately 1000 unique responses from Canadian residents and offered demographic breakdowns. Access to specific poll insights is available in an infographic and in FlightNetwork.com's blog post.
