NEW YORK, June 24, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Poverty affects an enormous number of people in the New York Jewish community, and there has been a rapid growth in Jewish poverty in recent years. More than 560,000 people live in poor and near-poor Jewish households in the eight-county New York area and 45 percent of the children in Jewish households live in poor or near-poor households, according to the Jewish Community Study of New York: 2011 Special Report on Poverty.
In an effort to help this segment of our community and engage new donors, on Monday, June 24, 2013, an anonymous donor will match each $10 donation to UJA-Federation, up to $2,500, for a combined donation of $20. The Mitzvah Monday campaign, now in its second year, is part of UJA-Federation's continuing efforts to find innovative and meaningful ways to help those in need and engage new donors via digital channels such as social media. These gifts, which go towards UJA-Federation's annual campaign, can help feed hungry children, support programs that cover basic utilities, help people find work, and protect a family's dignity. Mitzvah Monday outreach efforts last year resulted in 84 percent of donations coming from individuals who had never before given to UJA-Federation.
