Man Convicted of Three Counts Under Ontario SPCA Act

RENFREW COUNTY, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - July 3, 2013) - On May 24 2013, Corey Thomson of Renfrew County pleaded guilty under the Ontario SPCA Act to causing distress to 50 animals.

In late 2012, Ontario SPCA Investigators received a complaint regarding several animals in distress on a property near Egansville, Ontario.

On December 1 2012, with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police and a local veterinarian, the Ontario SPCA executed a search warrant at the property and subsequently removed 50 animals from Mr. Thomson's care. This included two donkeys, 23 ducks, 12 rabbits, nine dogs, and one ferret. Standards of care were not being met for these animals, and many were suffering from health concerns, some of which were severe.

Mr. Thomson is prohibited from owning, living with, or having care of animals for 20 years. Ontario SPCA Agents and Inspectors have been permitted to inspect Mr. Thomson's residence at any time.

"If providing for an animal in your care becomes difficult, it's important to take the appropriate steps to ensure that the animal's health isn't compromised," says Larry Wilkinson, Senior Inspector. "Contact your local Ontario SPCA or Veterinarian to see what options are available."

The Ontario SPCA reminds pet owners that if you have concerns for the welfare of your animal there are other alternatives than allowing an animal to go without adequate care.
