Cornwall Woman Enters Guilty Plea for Ontario SPCA Act Charges, After Acting Aggressively Toward Her Dog

CORNWALL, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - July 5, 2013) - A Cornwall, Ontario woman has pled guilty to two counts under the Ontario SPCA Act for acting aggressively toward her dog.

The charges included:

  • One count of causing distress
  • One count of failing to provide standards of care

On December 4, 2012, an Ontario SPCA Inspector received a call from a concerned citizen who videotaped a woman slapping, yelling, swearing and yanking a dog on a leash.

Gertrude Leduc received two years probation and 10 years prohibition from living with, caring for, or owning an animal. Ms. Leduc also received a $250 fine on each charge and a court order to surrender her dog to the Ontario SPCA.

The dog was then surrendered to the Ontario SPCA by Ms. Leduc and is currently in the care of a foster home.

"We are encouraged to see Animal Welfare taken seriously in the eyes of the law," said Larry Wilkinson, Senior Inspector. "No animal should ever have to suffer at the hands of an irresponsible owner."

The Ontario SPCA reminds pet owners that if you have concerns for the welfare of your animal there are alternatives other than allowing an animal to go without adequate care.
