Calgary Food Bank Getting Ready for Their Largest Food Drive

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Aug. 22, 2013) - Activities are underway for one of the city's largest food drives and biggest volunteer efforts, the 9th annual City-Wide Food Drive on Saturday, September 21.

  • Calgarians are encouraged to watch for information and donation bags on their doors starting Tuesday, September 17.
  • Fill the bag with non-perishable food items and leave on your front doorstep for 8:00 am pick-up.
  • Make sure the donation is visible so the volunteers can see it, as there will be no door-knocking.

This one day food drive happens at an important time of year when we are traditionally heading into the period of highest demand due to back-to-school expenses, the completion of summer jobs and the upcoming holiday season. This year we anticipate a greater demand for hampers due to the devastating floods only 10 weeks ago. Many Calgarians who may have never accessed the Food Bank may need to turn to us as the bills from relocation and renovations mount, stressing many financially.

The City-Wide Food Drive is one of the largest single-day food drives in North America.

511,102lbs of food was collected in 2008, breaking the Guinness World Record for most food collected in a day.

More than 3 million pounds of food have been collected in the past 8 years.
