Lucite International Partners With Museum of Arts and Design

Maker of Acrylic Material Donates LuciteLux(R) for 'Out of Hand' Exhibition

MEMPHIS, TN and NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Oct 7, 2013) -  Lucite International, owner of the LuciteLux® acrylic brand, today announced a partnership with the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) that includes the in-kind donation of LuciteLux® acrylic material used to make display pedestals for the highly anticipated 'Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital' exhibition. Opening on October 16, 'Out of Hand' is the first major museum show to examine the impact of digital fabrication technologies, including 3D printing and computer-numerically-controlled (CNC) machining, on the creative processes of artists, architects, and designers.

Lucite International worked with Ron Labaco, Marcia Docter Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design, and the exhibition designers, Incorporated, New York, to create display pedestals for some of the more than 85 works in the collection, which come from an international cast of established and emerging practitioners.

"MAD is once again on the leading edge with 'Out of Hand.' Digital fabrication is a huge trend that touches every design discipline and we're proud to help them bring this important exhibition to the public," said Simon Ellis, business director for Lucite International. "When we first learned of MAD's desire to have the pieces 'float' on clear acrylic, we knew the pedestals had to be made with LuciteLux®."

LuciteLux® is often used by museums to display and protect their collections with maximum optical clarity. The museum's designers chose LuciteLux® L Clear for its strength, durability and ease of fabrication. It is also easy to clean and effectively resists crazing, which is when fine cracks develop on the surface of a material. Northeast Plastic Supply of Philadelphia fabricated the pedestals for the exhibition.

"Acrylic, and LuciteLux® in particular, is an incredibly important medium in the worlds of art and design," said Labaco. "We are pleased to partner with Lucite International and present the works of the 'Out of Hand' collection on pedestals made of their visionary material. Our partnership allows us to ensure every detail of this exhibition meets the highest of aesthetic standards."

Labaco sits on the judging panel for Lucite International's inaugural JUST IMAGINE Awards, which celebrate the imagination and inspiration of designers who work with LuciteLux®. The winner and runner-up will be announced later this month. For more information, visit http://www.lucitelux.com/just-imagine-awards.

Museums across the globe also use LuciteLux® Museum Grade UV Max, a specialty acrylic sheet made to offer the maximum protection possible from harmful UV light, which causes fading and decomposition of photos, artwork and exhibits.
