Biofuels Digest Ranks LanzaTech #2 in Hottest 50 Companies in Bioenergy and #4 in Hottest 30 Companies in Biobased Chemicals Lists

LanzaTech Also Honored by the Cleantech Group as a Cleantech 100 Company and Continued Excellence Award Winner

ROSELLE, IL--(Marketwired - Oct 11, 2013) - LanzaTech, a producer of low-carbon fuels and chemicals from waste gases, has been ranked #2 in Biofuels Digest's annual list of the 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy and #4 in its 30 Hottest Companies in Biobased Chemicals. Biofuels Digest is the most widely read media source globally for the renewables fuel and chemical industries and LanzaTech is one of only two companies to be ranked in the top 5 in both lists.

"The road to commercialization is long and every step is significant," said Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech. "It's exciting and humbling to be listed among the most innovative renewable fuels and chemicals companies in the world. We are on a path to create a global company that is changing the rules of energy production and we see the annual 'Hottest' lists as recognition of our progress."

LanzaTech's high rankings in the Biofuels Digest's lists were driven by the significant success the company has had during the past year. LanzaTech became the first to scale gas fermentation technology to a pre-commercial level, developing and successfully operating two facilities in China that convert waste flue gas from Baosteel and Shougang steel plants into ethanol. Both facilities operated at annualized production capacity of 100,000 gallons. Site location and engineering plans for two full commercial facilities are under way and commercial production is expected to begin in 2014.

The company has also advanced corporate partnerships with leaders in the global steel and chemical industries such as Siemens Metals Technologies, Harsco and INVISTA as it develops competitive biobased routes to producing fuels and chemicals.

"Jim Lane's Biofuels Digest is the most widely read biofuels news daily in the industry and this recognition from his readers and the panel of experts he assembled means a lot to LanzaTech and our partners," said Dr. Holmgren.

The rankings for both the Hottest 50 Companies in Bioenergy and Hottest 30 Companies in Biobased Chemicals are based 50 percent on votes from an invited panel of distinguished international selectors, and 50 percent on votes from subscribers of Biofuels Digest and voters on Twitter, Facebook and photo voting via BiofuelsDigest.com.

In announcing the lists, Biofuels Digest editor Jim Lane noted, "Companies that did well have demonstrated financial strength as well as technological differentiation."

Overall, more than 100,000 individual company ratings were received from panelists and voters in the Biofuels Digest's annual ranking.

LanzaTech also was honored this week as one of the top 100 clean technology companies in the world by the Cleantech Group. A total of 5,864 companies were nominated this year from 60 countries, with the top 100 companies hailing from 18 countries. The 90-member expert panel was drawn principally from leading financial investors and representatives of multi-national corporations, located in Asia, Europe, and North America.

The Global Cleantech 100 list is unique because it highlights the promise of private clean technology companies from all around the world, focusing on those companies which the players in the market feel are currently the most likely to make the most significant market impact over the next 5-10 years.

Along with the Cleantech 100 recognition, LanzaTech also won the award for "Continued Excellence" given to the highest-ranked company that has made it onto the Global Cleantech 100 list for at least the last three consecutive years.

"It is an honor to have been recognized by the Cleantech Group given the depth and breadth of the technologies beyond biofuels and biochemicals they consider," said Dr. Holmgren. "It is reassuring to see so many great companies that are mission driven to make energy and life more sustainable -- we're thrilled to be listed alongside them."
