AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwired - Nov 12, 2013) - Vascular lesions, usually appearing as red or purple spots or bumps on the skin, are now being treated with an innovative new laser technology called the VBeam® Perfecta at Sanova Dermatology, an Austin dermatology practice. Dr. Adam Mamelak and Dr. Miriam Hanson treat skin conditions such as spider veins, port wine stains, and rosacea with this pulse dye laser in a unique procedure called vascular laser therapy. Dr. Mamelak says this technique can safely and effectively treat a number of dermatological concerns and skin diseases by using a specialized yellow laser light. The light is absorbed by red chromophores, which cause the reddish appearance of vascular lesions. The treatment, according to Drs. Hanson and Mamelak, is designed to use the heat and light of the laser to destroy abnormal blood vessels that cause vascular lesions. Dr. Mamelak says healthy tissue surrounding the affected areas should remain unharmed, due to a cool burst that is delivered to the upper layers of skin miniseconds before the laser reaches the targeted area.

In a recent blog post on the dermatology practice's website titled, "Laser Treatment Can Improve a Wide Variety of Skin Conditions," the doctors explain that the treatment can be performed on most patients. Dr. Hanson says, in some cases, vascular laser therapy can even be used on children who have infantile hemangiomas or other vascular skin conditions that may be of concern. The VBeam® Perfecta, according to Drs. Mamelak and Hanson, can also be beneficial for treating adverse effects from other procedures, including scarring after surgery for skin cancer.

The Austin dermatologists say patients who are considered candidates for VBeam® Perfecta laser therapy can typically complete treatment sessions on an outpatient basis, but may require more than one session to achieve optimal results. He also says the pulse dye laser is able to remove redness from the affected area, helping patients who previously might have had to use makeup on a daily basis to cover it up. Dr. Mamelak explains that patients might also consider vascular laser therapy as an alternative to other treatments for vascular lesions. He notes that some patients choose the VBeam® for treatment of certain skin concerns rather than more common methods that may cause residual scarring.

Overall, Drs. Mamelak and Hanson say the VBeam® Perfecta is considered to be the "gold standard for the treatment of vascular lesions," and it allows them to effectively treat a number of conditions in a much safer, less invasive manner.
