New Data Show WaveTec Vision's ORA System(R) With VerifEye(TM) Is Increasing Penetration of US Cataract Surgery Market, Expanding Premium IOL Channel and Reducing Enhancement Rates

Latest Clinical and Industry Data to Be Presented This Week at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Conference

ALISO VIEJO, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 13, 2013) - WaveTec Vision, the leader in intraoperative wavefront measurement technology for cataract surgeons, will release new data on its proprietary ORA System® with VerifEye™ showing it has captured 3 percent of overall US cataract surgery volume and made a significant impact in the premium intraocular lens (IOL) channel. The data will be released during this week's annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).

The ORA System optimizes intraoperative wavefront data during cataract surgery to calculate IOL power. It is the technology of choice for more than 500 high-volume cataract surgeons who use it to provide critical feedback and guide premium IOL selection.

More than 120,000 cataract procedures have been performed to date with the ORA System, which has been tested, refined and optimized with over 10 software/hardware upgrades in the past three years. VerifEye is the most significant upgrade yet to the ORA System. VerifEye enables surgeons to confirm that the eye is stable prior to the measurement by providing streaming refractions in the preview screen, which surgeons consider a tremendous benefit.

"We look forward to presenting our latest data at the conference and underscoring the growing and significant role the ORA System with VerifEye is playing in the overall cataract surgery market," said Tom Frinzi, WaveTec President and CEO.

Among data to be presented at AAO:

  • Helping Grow Premium IOL Channel: Conversion rates from standard to premium IOLs are up 27 percent in ORA practices.
  • Reducing Enhancement Rates: Surgeons are reporting a 47 percent drop in overall enhancement rates with the use of the ORA System to confirm IOL power selection.
  • Prediction Error Gap: Clinical data reveals there is an 8 percent prediction error and distribution gap at .50 diopters between the outcomes achieved by cataract refractive surgeons using the ORA System, versus traditional biometry.
  • Toric Cylinder Reduction Success: The ORA System provides significantly better cylinder reduction with Toric intraocular lenses than previous technologies.
  • The ORA/Femto Advantage: The synergy between the ORA System and laser-assisted refractive cataract surgery has been demonstrated to provide the greatest possible visual outcome for cataract patients.

Ophthalmologists may visit WaveTec at booth #1616 during AAO in New Orleans, Nov. 16-19. Multiple papers and posters will be presented on the ORA System during the conference.
