drchrono Releases API for Developers to Enter the Highly Regulated Healthcare Industry

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwired - Dec 11, 2013) - drchrono Inc., the creator of a free Electronic Medical Record (EMR) platform on the iPad, iPhone and cloud, today released its API that will allow thousands of developers to build their own healthcare applications on top of the drchrono platform.

Of all the APIs listed on ProgrammableWeb only 1.3% are associated with the medical services sector. Innovators have avoided developing applications for the healthcare industry due to high regulations and the difficulty accessing APIs from health institutions. But drchrono is looking to overhaul such difficulties by making developers requests to the API as easy as a sign up and one week review process.

Similar to the application store for the iPhone and the Facebook's API release that created new opportunities for entrepreneurs to develop applications, drchrono hopes to spark a new wave for thousands of developers to find opportunities in the rapidly evolving healthcare space and launch new companies in the process. The current procedure for accessing a health institution's API involves working with the organization's business development team, a process that could take months to years to complete. Since each institution utilizes its own API, it can be a very time consuming process for companies to access them. By leveraging drchrono, these organizations can have access to their patients' information for application construction within a week.

Developers are not the only ones that can use the API, other users include:

  • DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) companies that can provide MRI, ultrasound imaging and x-rays to physicians as soon as the radiology department finishes reviewing them. This dramatically reduces the turn-around time for patient results.

  • Medical billing companies that would like to develop mobile applications for physicians to use on top of drchrono.

  • Physicians that would like to add their own custom features on top of the platform to work with the workflows of their own office.

For the past 4.5 years, drchrono has primarily focused on enhancing the patient and physicians experience and has attracted 53,000 physicians and over 2.6 million patients. drchrono initially started out as a company to remind patients about their appointments. As the company grew, the user base asked for more features. drchrono's platform expanded to practice management and electronic medical record management web and iPhone applications. As the platform took on more users, there were more requests to build on top of drchrono, leading to the decision to release an API.

Daniel Kivatinos, COO and cofounder mentions, "The goal of the API is to allow creative developers and physicians to enhance the drchrono platform. We are trying to create a place that people can build on, and our goal is to connect physicians and patients though better technology in healthcare leveraging mobile and web. There are brilliant engineers and physicians who can enhance what we are doing by building on top of drchrono. We will be vetting the best apps built and featuring them on our healthcare app store." "Silicon Valley's smartest minds are just starting to learn and work on fixing healthcare, and we want to help facilitate change and let some of the best minds work with us," stated Michael Nusimow, CEO and cofounder of drchrono.

One company that immediately jumped onboard building on drchrono's API is MedXT. MedXT is a web based DICOM radiology company. Reshma Khilnani, cofounder of MedXT mentions, "The API was so simple to use, we were up and running in a couple hours. The drchrono API is more like the API you see in top-tier modern web platforms than the typical healthcare system integration process. You can do your integration in hours, not months. We are using drchrono's single sign on because it's simple and powerful. Now with MedXT, it will bring radiology data to physicians' fingertips in the interface they use every day."

"We were very impressed that because of drchrono's API, we are now able to easily integrate our MedXT program with drchrono's EHR platform and have all of our important patient information centralized in one database," said Dr. Thomas Ross, President and CEO of Critical Medical Solutions, Inc. "As doctors, we need access to previous studies, patient histories and cases to create a continuity of care for the patient and to mitigate risk. Through drchrono and MedXT we are able to now do that in a very efficient manner and also greatly improve our digital workflow. The electronic management of healthcare data is the future, and we feel we're a big step ahead by working with drchrono and MedXT."

"Tech focused healthcare startup BetterDoctor sees drchrono's API as a way to enhance their doctor search service," said Ari Tulla, CEO of BetterDoctor. "BetterDoctor focuses on matching consumers to the right doctor, and we are excited to enhance this experience by allowing doctors to connect their EHR to BetterDoctor via the new drchrono API."
