New England Law | Boston Implements Xirrus High-Performance Wi-Fi to Help Streamline Education

With More Than 1,000 Mobile Devices on Wi-Fi Every Day, the Wireless Network Uses 20 Percent Fewer Access Points Than Before and Reduces Total Cost of Ownership by 30 Percent

THOUSAND OAKS, CA--(Marketwired - Dec 12, 2013) - Xirrus, the leading provider of high-performance wireless networks, today announced that New England Law | Boston has deployed Xirrus Wireless Arrays across its main five-story downtown Boston location. The facility, which houses classrooms, faculty offices, and a library, is the heart of a school that is revered for providing a world-class education in the legal field.

Xirrus XR-4000 series Arrays were deployed to provide the wireless service. The XR-4000 supports an integrated wireless controller and is configurable with four or eight modular 450Mbps 802.11n radios. Each radio is software programmable for either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz operation, providing flexibility to adapt to changing client types over time. The high radio density Xirrus Array significantly reduces the amount of equipment required with fewer APs and no central controller. This also results in savings in cabling, switch ports, installation time, maintenance, and power consumption, substantially lowering the overall TCO of the deployment over time.

With the Xirrus network, faculty and students at New England Law | Boston can use and present online media in classrooms and students can access legal references from their laptops, phones and tablets. Since the installation of the network, staff reports increased student engagement during classes.

"The rapid proliferation of mobile devices among students, as well as a recent adoption of various online services by faculty, had quickly exposed the limitations of our existing wireless solution's ability to keep up with these changing trends in a logical and affordable way," said Derek Lofstrom, senior network engineer at New England Law | Boston. "Since implementing the Xirrus network, we can support up to 70 percent more devices on the network than before, and the scalability of the network has ensured that it will support growth and excellence in higher learning for years to come."

Before deploying the Xirrus network and Xirrus XMS management software, the school considered restricting access to certain bandwidth-intensive applications from the wireless network so that students could be provided adequate bandwidth for the two or more mobile devices they each bring on campus. With Xirrus Application Control enabled through the Xirrus Management System (XMS), administrators benefitted from a comprehensive analysis of application usage across mobile devices on the network. With this information, administrators are now able to make much more informed decisions concerning bandwidth prioritization on the wireless network.

"The Xirrus network at the New England Law | Boston ensures that every student receives unfettered access to educational materials, and without performance glitches that hamper other wireless solutions," said Bruce Miller, vice president of product marketing at Xirrus. "Xirrus Wireless Arrays provide the capacity and robust service quality to make these types of dense wireless deployments successful."
