Record Year for Calgary Food Bank Christmas Campaign

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Jan. 6, 2014) - The outpouring of generosity from Calgarians pushed the CBC Calgary Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive over the top for a record $1,348,124 in food and funds.

The annual food drive and fundraiser was launched on December 2, with a goal of raising $1 million for the Calgary Food Bank. "We set an optimistic goal considering the amazing support we received just a few months ago (after the floods)," says Food Bank CEO, James McAra. "We are so thankful that Calgarians have continued to support their neighbours through this campaign."

"This is the 28th year of the CBC Calgary Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive, and every year I'm amazed at the outpouring of support from the community," says Cathy Glover, director, Community Investment, Suncor Energy. "2013 has been a challenging year for many Calgarians, but once again the community stepped up and together we surpassed our goal."

For Alan Thorgeirson, CBC Calgary's Managing Director, exceeding the $1 million target by more than $300,000 is a testament not only to the hard work of the Food Bank, Suncor and CBC Calgary, but to the generosity of Calgarians. "Through December's record snowfall, with brutal temperatures and snarled traffic, we still had Calgarians making it to our lobby to donate personally," says Thorgeirson. "Taking that time out of their day to help such an important cause shows us all the true spirit of Calgary and the people who live here."

Since 1985 the CBC Calgary Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive has raised more than $13.5 million for the Calgary Food Bank.
