MENLO PARK, CA--(Marketwired - Jan 7, 2014) - Adrian Cockcroft, the former Netflix cloud architect who helped lead the company's widely followed shift to an all-cloud computing infrastructure, has joined Battery Ventures as a technology fellow.

In his new role, Cockcroft will advise Battery and its portfolio of investments on various technology trends and issues; assist with deal sourcing and due diligence; and speak at technology-industry conferences and events around the globe. Cockcroft is Battery's first technology fellow, and the position is designed to be a long-term engagement.

"I am thrilled to be joining Battery, one of the pioneers in investing in the cloud-computing space and a firm whose internal culture mirrors Netflix's," said Cockcroft, who began his new job last week. "Both firms are very open to trying new things."

At Netflix, Cockcroft played a key role in the firm's much-discussed migration to a "cloud native" architecture and the open sourcing of the widely used NetflixOSS platform. Prior to joining Netflix in 2007, Cockcroft held distinguished engineer roles at both eBay and Sun Microsystems. At Sun, where he worked for 16 years, Cockcroft authored several widely read books on computing performance and scalability and was the company's chief architect for high-performance and grid-computing technologies.

He was named one of the top 10 cloud-computing leaders in 2011 and 2012 by SearchCloudComputing magazine.

"Adrian's long history of innovating in the tech world makes him a huge asset to Battery," said Scott Tobin, a Battery general partner. "His expertise and network will be invaluable in helping our existing portfolio companies and finding exciting new ones in which to invest."
