Tokutek Sees Four-Fold Customer Growth in 2013 From Big Data Demand

Performance Database Company Sees Strong Demand for New MongoDB Distribution and Open Source Availability

LEXINGTON, MA--(Marketwired - Jan 7, 2014) - Tokutek, delivering database performance at scale, affirmed its place as a big data player in 2013 with a four-fold increase in its customer base and the introduction of TokuMX® for MongoDB. Specifically, the launch of TokuMX drove record-breaking numbers of downloads, surpassing those of Tokutek's MySQL and MariaDB storage engine, TokuDB.

Introduced last June, TokuMX™ is a high-performance distribution of MongoDB that dramatically increases performance and database compression. TokuMX works best on large databases (typically 100 GBs or larger) by speeding indexing by 20x or more and by compressing data up to 90%, thereby radically improving database scalability. In September, Tokutek followed up with the introduction of TokuMX Enterprise Edition with hot back-up, which is backed with the subscriptions and services necessary to support business-grade applications.

Open Source Initiatives -- Tokutek became an open source company last April with the announcement of the TokuDB Community Edition of its MySQL database storage engine. Although TokuDB had been free for evaluation, the new TokuDB Community Edition extended free use to deployed environments. Going open source led to a big boost in TokuDB demand and weekly download rates jumped by two orders of magnitude. At the same time, Tokutek announced TokuDB Enterprise Edition; its subscription includes technical support, initial customer onboarding services, and advanced tools for backup and recovery.

"Tokutek expanded its product offerings in 2013 with the introduction of TokuMX and brought the performance and compression we're well known for to the white-hot NoSQL market," said John Partridge, CEO of Tokutek. "Releasing TokuMX as open source helped us to quickly tap into this rapidly-growing community and get our products into the hands of talented developers, database administrators, and DevOps managers."

Growing Customer Base -- With over 400% growth of its customer base in 2013, Tokutek attracted both established enterprise organizations such as Mozilla and Sears, research groups like the University of Montreal's Philip Awadalla Laboratory, as well as innovative startups like Crowdtap, online poker site SharkScope, TSheets, and LuckyOrange.

Crowdtap, a social influence marketing platform that makes it easy for marketers to generate unmatched social activity and provide valuable insights, migrated to TokuMX from MongoDB this fall. "Because it features document-level locking vs. MongoDB's collection-level locking, TokuMX was 20%-25% faster right out of the box with no special tuning," said Michael D'Auria, Crowdtap. "TokuMX also delivered 40%-60% higher compression, eliminating the need to invest in additional SSD drives."

Awards -- In recognition of its significant and continuing contribution to the MySQL community, Tokutek received the 2013 MySQL Community Award for Corporate Contributor of the Year. The award was presented at the community welcome reception at the 2013 Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo in Santa Clara, CA.
