New Vicor Webinars to Focus on High Voltage DC Distribution Trends and Design Considerations for Real-World HVDC Applications

Vicor Extends Popular HVDC Webinar Series With New Sessions Addressing HVDC for Datacenter Applications, Commercial Facilities, Avionics, Heavy Machinery, Military Vehicles, and Hybrid Vehicles and Transportation

ANDOVER, MA--(Marketwired - Jan 23, 2014) - Vicor Corporation (NASDAQ: VICR) today announced the next installments in its popular Power Advantage Educational Series, featuring expert design tips and techniques aimed at optimizing power solution design. The six new webinars, scheduled to run from January to March, will feature guest presenters from organizations that are leading the way in high voltage DC (HVDC) deployment. These sessions will give attendees an in-depth understanding of HVDC distribution trends, implementation benefits and design considerations for a range of real-world applications.

Where previously stepping down from high DC voltages was expensive, inefficient and required large converters, new industry standards and advanced power components are enabling power engineers to simplify the DC distribution power chain, reduce conversion stages and achieve breakthrough efficiency gains without compromising system size. This trend is accelerating the adoption of HVDC architectures and systems across a wide range of mainstream applications spanning the datacenter, commercial facilities, avionics, heavy machinery, military vehicles, and hybrid vehicles and transportation.

The new sessions in Vicor's ongoing HVDC webinar series will be presented and moderated by Stephen Oliver, Vice President of Vicor's VI Chip division, in cooperation with leading HVDC experts from across the industry. Together they will help educate attendees about application-specific HVDC requirements, enabling topologies and components, and practical design approaches that optimize new and legacy equipment for HVDC. These webinars include:

380 VDC in the Datacenter (January 30) - Presented by David Mohr, Distinguished Technologist, Power Systems Architect, Hewlett Packard, this presentation will focus on HVDC-ready, commercially available power solutions for the datacenter, major manufacturer initiatives centric to HVDC, and important industry standards. To register for this webinar visit here.

380 VDC Infrastructure: An Engineering Perspective (February 6) - Presented by David Geary, Director of Engineering, StarLine DC Solutions, and BJ Sonnenberg, Manager Business Development, Emerson Network Power, this session will address how a 380 VDC distribution system for critical applications is put together and how it compares to the traditional topologies used today. Engineering considerations and details related to DC power distribution including grounding, safety, circuit protection and standards will be covered. 380 VDC in Commercial Buildings and Offices (February 13) - Presented by Bernd Wunder, Project leader LV-DC Grids, Fraunhofer IISB (DCC+G), this presentation will focus on the benefits of HVDC for retail, office and other commercial facilities, enabling power technologies, and achievable power efficiency improvements. To register for this webinar visit here.

270 VDC in Commercial and Defense Aircraft (February 20) - This presentation will address the significant size, weight and power (SWaP) benefits that can be achieved with HVDC in airliners, fighter jets, transport aircraft, helicopters and UAVs, and will include a discussion on associated military standards and specifications. To register for this webinar visit here.

HVDC in Earth-moving Equipment and Land-based Military Vehicles (February 27) - This presentation will highlight the energy efficiency improvements enabled by 600 to 800 VDC distribution for conventional, hybrid and electric heavy machinery, and will include schematics and design recommendations, as well as a discussion about bidirectional power conversion for vehicle battery charging. To register for this webinar visit here.

400 VDC in Hybrid Automotive and Transportation Applications (March 6) - This presentation will focus on hybrid power chains for cars, trucks, buses and trains, and the associated benefits of 400 VDC distribution for achieving efficient power delivery for propulsion and regenerative braking.
