NEWMARKET, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Feb. 20, 2014) - The Ontario SPCA would like to remind animal owners of the dangers of rising water levels and rushing water.

With temperatures beginning to increase and a heavy rainfall warning in effect, there will be a potential danger of high water levels for creeks, rivers and streams. There is a concern for the safety of our pets around these types of dangers. We advise pet owners to take precautions to protect their animals from potential harm. Care and control of our animals at all times and knowing their whereabouts, will help keep them safe.

Increased rainfall and melting ice and snow will result in puddles that can be contaminated from high levels of salt and other de-icing products that can pose a health threat to our pets. Please keep an eye on your pets as you are out walking to ensure they are not drinking from an unknown source.

"Pet owners need to be extremely vigilant with their pets around rising water levels, rushing water and dirty water", says Connie Mallory, Chief Inspector. "These pose a significant health and safety danger to our pets."
