Verizon proved far faster than any other major carrier, turning in the fastest data rates and the quickest average download times. T-Mobile turned in an impressive second-place finish, doubling the download speed of third-place AT&T. Sprint finished last in Laptop Mag's testing, offering 3G-like speeds in some locations.
"Now that smartphone shoppers can get the hottest phones from every major provider, data performance is critical," said Mark Spoonauer, Laptop Mag's Editor-in-Chief. "It's clear that Verizon has beefed up its network in New York City, as it handily beat the other carriers."
Laptop Mag's tests took place in eight different locations around New York City, which involved recording upload and download speeds for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon at various landmarks. Laptop Mag also downloaded the "Angry Birds" game in each location to test real-world performance.
Testing was done using Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones to determine which carrier offers the most consistent high-speed connections. Locations included Flatiron District, Wall Street, Times Square, Grand Central Station, Guggenheim Museum, Pennsylvania Station, Grant's Tomb and Bethesda Fountain in Central Park.
