Seventh Generation's Campaign for a Toxin Free Generation Works to Reform the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act

Seventh Generation Unleashes Toxin Freedom Fighters to Mobilize a Nation-Wide Call to Action - Urging Congress to Stand Up for Safer Chemicals and Reform Chemical Safety Regulations

BURLINGTON, VT--(Marketwired - Mar 21, 2014) - Today, Seventh Generation, the nation's leading brand of non-toxic and renewable bio-based household, baby and personal care solutions, amasses a first-ever, national campaign to instigate meaningful change to reform The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) that has laid dormant since 1976. Unlike other major environmental laws, TSCA has never been updated and has proven to be an ineffective law for regulating chemicals. For the past 30 years, the law has allowed 62,000 chemicals to remain on the market without required testing.

With capes, masks and petitions in hand, comes a new generation of activists ready to make a change. Seventh Generation's Toxin Freedom Fighters are an influential group of kids looking to inspire individuals to take a stand for what we all deserve -- no more toxic chemicals in our lives. By bike, by skateboard, or by foot, The Toxin Freedom Fighters are stepping up to make a difference, speaking out to Congress and calling on others to do the same by signing their petition www.fighttoxins.com to benefit their generation and generations to come.

The Toxin Freedom Fighters' favorite facts:

  • We are hit with 300 toxins before we're even born
  • Early exposure to toxic chemicals may lead to increased likelihood of cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and other diseases and health problems
  • The primary U.S. law that regulates chemicals in everyday products hasn't been updated in 38 years

"It's just not right that we have to worry about toxic chemicals in our homes, our schools, and in the water and products we use every day. Today hundreds of untested chemicals find their way into the bloodstream of our children, even prior to birth. As a parent I believe we must mobilize to protect our children and the next generation," said John Replogle, President and CEO, Seventh Generation. "As a business leader, I'm joined by hundreds of other like-minded leaders who feel that it is time for business to act and to take the lead in urging Congress to reform chemical safety. It's our collective moral duty to see this change through by reforming State and Federal chemical regulations to keep the next generation safe and healthy."

Over the next month, Seventh Generation's Toxin Freedom Fighters and partners, including Safer Chemicals Healthy Families; national parenting bloggers Mike Adamick, Unruly Things, Dear Baby, Baby Meets City and The Lovely Owls; a cadre of influential mom bloggers; and additional online and offline grassroots influencers, will work to garner 100,000 signatures from individuals across the country.

At the end of April 2014, Seventh Generation, along with The Toxin Freedom Fighters and partners, will head to Washington, D.C. to present the petition and urge Congress to pass meaningful chemical reform to protect public health and the environment.

The talk of change to reform chemical safety among the business community started in December 2013 when Seventh Generation, along with the American Sustainable Business Council and many of the country's leading consumer brands, established a new coalition "Companies for Safer Chemicals." The coalition understands that stronger chemical policy reform is good for business, and works to educate consumers and policymakers about the business case for reform. The founding members include Seventh Generation, the American Sustainable Business Council, Patagonia, Stonyfield Farm, Aubrey Organics, Method, Naturepedic, Badger, Annie's, EILEEN FISHER, Zarbee's Naturals, Keys, Think Dirty, Beautycounter, and others.
