Enservio Event Shows Innovation Top of Carrier Agendas

Property Innovation Summit Explores Creative Leadership and Disruptive Innovation in Insurance Industry

NEEDHAM, MA--(Marketwired - Apr 11, 2014) - Enservio, Inc., the leading provider of software and services across the entire value chain of contents claims processing, today announced a successful conclusion to its 8th annual Property Innovation Summit. More than 130 senior property insurance executives flocked to Boston to hear presentations by industry thought leaders and university professors including Clayton Christensen of Harvard and CNN political analyst David Gergen.

Author of "The Innovator's Dilemma," keynoter Clayton Christensen of Harvard Business School defined innovation as falling into three distinct types: Market-creating Innovation (citing how Toyota entered the US market with low-cost cars that drove mass consumer demand); Sustaining Innovation (making good products better), and Efficiency Innovation (citing Geico as an example of a company great at squeezing out efficiencies).

For marketers, the core focus must entail an "understanding that mirrors how customers experience life," he said. "Critical to designing meaningful products is asking yourself the question, what is the job that needs to be done?" In response to an audience question about the burdens imposed by entrenched industry regulations, Christensen responded by saying, "You must innovate outside the reach of regulation."

"Creative leadership means managing ahead of change," noted CNN's David Gergen, a Washington D.C. insider who served under four U.S. presidents. Gergen delivered a candid speech on climate change, bipartisan politics, the imperative of strong leadership, and the rapidity of change driven by exponential growth of new technologies. "Countries should be judged on their ability to innovate, not on their GDP," he said. "We're the most innovative nation in the world. Innovation is in our DNA."

Editor and publisher Brian P. Sullivan of The Property Insurance Report, has spent 35 years writing about the industry. A highly provocative speaker, he noted that the single biggest challenge facing the will to innovate is the "unwillingness to fail." To say that "failure is not an option" represents old-school thinking. Sullivan mentioned the near-future disruption of price transparency and comparison pricing websites. "They say it's hard to kill an insurance company. The next 10 years will bring more change than the last three decades. Where value equals price plus product, few insurers sell value to customers."

Drone expert and Donan CEO Lyle Donan gave a compelling presentation on the usage of camera-equipped drones (small unmanned aerial systems) to settle the most challenging roofing claims. Drones can effortlessly collect information on steep or fragile roofs, collapsed buildings, and locations potentially harmful for adjusters. Donan demonstrated how the photo quality of drone images is "good enough" to establish root causes of claims as well as effectively assess damage.

The Honorable Oklahoma Commissioner of Insurance, John Doak, embodied a progressive regulator. Doak kicked off his remarks by saying how he believes regulators overall need to socialize more with the carriers they serve. Doak showed footage of the devastating tornadoes that hit Moore last summer, discussing how Oklahoma mobilizes the insurance community to address consumer needs. In particular, Doak called out Enservio's ReStore Card® which was used during recovery efforts, noting how checks are typically delayed at the bank, "adding insult to injury in a tough time." Helping homeowners get their lives back during the Moore tornados greatly reduced the stress of the claim.
