Minister Goodyear Celebrates Smart Computing Platform Successes in Southern Ontario

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 15, 2014) - Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDevOntario)

Minister Goodyear delivered opening remarks today at the Southern Ontario Smart Computing Innovation Platform (SOSCIP): Impact 2014 conference. The conference showcased results to-date, celebrated the partnerships that have fuelled its successes, and launched a new phase of growth for SOSCIP.

The Minister spoke about the Government of Canada's commitment to supporting groundbreaking research and innovation.

The Minister also noted a series of new funding initiatives, launched in December 2013 that will continue to fuel business innovation in the region. More than $530 million over five years is available through the Southern Ontario Prosperity Initiatives, aimed at retaining, attracting and growing businesses in southern Ontario to increase the region's global competitiveness.

  • Businesses, not-for-profit organizations, post-secondary institutions and angel organizations can now apply for funding through a series of initiatives delivered by FedDev Ontario.

  • FedDev Ontario contributed up to $20 million to the project, which has leveraged an additional $190 million in investments. This is supporting this collaborative research and innovation platform in southern Ontario, which brought together a consortium of seven universities and a lead industry partner, IBM. The consortium is led by the University of Toronto and Western University, and also includes McMaster University, Queen's University, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Waterloo.

  • Researchers working through the consortium infrastructure have been using supercomputers and cloud computing to interpret massive quantities of data in areas spanning from water management to intelligent urban design, to analyzing data critical to healthcare statistics.
