YMCA's Healthy Kids Day(R) Gives Kids a Jump on a Healthy Summer

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwired - Apr 21, 2014) - The YMCA wants kids to keep moving this summer.

As part of the Y's commitment to strengthen community by addressing critical gaps in health and education, Healthy Kids Day,® which occurs Saturday, April 26, encourages kids and parents to commit to keeping the body and mind active once school is out. The free event will take place from 10 am to 1 pm at all Houston-area YMCAs.

Research shows that childhood obesity rates are on the rise with 34.4% of kids in the Houston-area being overweight. These students are also heavier than other students in national population.

"Kids in Houston need the opportunity to be active," said Shawn Borzelleri, YMCA vice president of programs. "Couple that with the fact that children are even more idle in summer months and you begin to understand the importance of developing healthy habits now. Our goal is to improve the overall health and well-being of kids and inspire habits they can continue into adulthood."

Each YMCA across the greater Houston area is taking part in the celebration. Though activities at each Houston area YMCA may vary, some activities may include:

  • Fitness demonstrations
  • Arts and crafts
  • Moon walks
  • Facility tours
  • Summer program registrations

YMCA's Healthy Kids Day, celebrated at nearly 1,600 Ys across the country, aims to get more kids moving and learning, so they can keep up the habit all summer long -- a critical out-of-school time for kids' health.
