Welocalize Collaborates With TAUS in Launch of New Online Post-Editing Course

FREDERICK, MD--(Marketwired - Apr 30, 2014) - Welocalize, a global leader in localization and translation services, is teaming up with TAUS in the launch of a new post-editing course. The online program is a collaborative industry initiative coordinated by TAUS in close cooperation with Welocalize and Hunnect with contributions from CPSL, Arabize, Version Internationale and Global Textware.

Designed for translators and linguists, the new online post-editing (PE) course provides best practices and training for the skills required for quality post-editing machine translation (MT) output. The content is designed to certify proficiency in post-editing.

"In an effort to share Welocalize's expertise in post-editing and machine translation, we are committed to help TAUS provide quality post-editing course material that can be shared with Welocalize's partners, vendors, translators and our employees," said Olga Beregovaya, vice president of Language Tools at Welocalize. "It was very important that the Welocalize Language Tools and Automation Team dedicated resources to this important project as it has a lasting impact on moving our industry forward to meet the demand for machine translation with post-editing."

The post-editing course consists of a generic module covering the general skills and practices, in addition to a language-specific module addressing the particular errors by different target languages. The course contains six modules and can be completed a short time, as each module is approximately one hour in length. The evaluation and the post-editing assignments take additional time. Upon successful completion of the course, a TAUS Post-Editing Certificate is awarded along with a certification logo to add to email signatures, online CVs or a website.

"Welocalize is proud to contribute to the new TAUS post-editing course initiative, as it establishes our commitment to continuously invest in the development of the global translation workforce," said Smith Yewell, CEO of Welocalize. "We see first-hand the growing demand for quality post-editing machine translation output and it is central to our position that we promote the best qualified talent and post-editing skills matched by the required support and training."

Currently, the post-editing course is available for Spanish, French, Arabic, Hungarian and Dutch. More languages will be added in the remainder of this year and next year.

"There is a massive adoption of MT post-editing as a new service in the global translation industry," said Jaap van der Meer, director of TAUS. "What is missing is a common reference to skills and best practices to do this work well. Members asked TAUS to provide a course that would integrate with the DQF tools and the post-editing best practices developed by TAUS members in the previous years. Collaboration with the language service providers who are involved with MT and post-editing everyday allowed us to deliver fast on this industry need."
