Shane Co. Announces Winners of 2014 "Creativity In Action" Scholarships

Jeweler Awards $10,000 to Students Who Apply Creativity With Worthy Aims


CENTENNIAL, CO--(Marketwired - May 14, 2014) - Shane Co., the largest independently owned jeweler in the US, today announced the winners of the company's 2014 "Creativity In Action" Scholarships. The goal of the scholarship program is to encourage and promote creativity as applied to worthy aims.

The winners are: Jessica Matallana, University of Central Oklahoma, $5,000 scholarship; Cassidy Yatsko, Boise State University, $3,000 scholarship; and Brady McBride, Oregon State University, $2,000 scholarship.

The scholarships were awarded based on written essays submitted by the applicants; academic achievement; and letters of recommendation from advisors, mentors and/or former employers. Applicants were also required to complete a scholarship application and submit a copy of their school transcript.

To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants were required to have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher; a GED or high school degree; and be currently enrolled (or be able to prove that they plan to enroll) at an accredited design school or university.

Ms. Matallana, in her essay, explained her goal of becoming a physical therapist, and then to use her personal experience overcoming serious injury while a dancer to inspire others to overcome their own physical challenges.

Ms. Yatsko, in her essay, explained that she would apply her scholarship toward obtaining a degree in psychology and become a high school counselor, where she would initiate programs designed to encourage students to pursue college degrees, in a community where a college education is not the norm.

Mr. McBride, in his essay, described his passion for sewing and how he has used it to produce items such as quilts and dolls for victims of natural disaster in China and for hospital patients in Shanghai and his local community.
