ACAP Health First to Make Supplements the Core of Supplemental Healthcare

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - May 15, 2014) - Research shows that absenteeism costs an employer, on average, $3,000 per year, per employee. To turn this trend around, ACAP Health (Accountable Care Accountable Patients) says company wellness programs need to focus on supplements.

"If all your employees could be healthy for just one more day a year, how would that positively impact your bottom line?" asked Todd Whitthorne, president of ACAP Health, who helps organizations develop strategies to increase employee health and productivity, and decrease healthcare related costs. "Our goal is to show employers how to shift their thought process of administering healthcare benefits to focus on measurably improving the health status of each employee. That's where the payoff starts for everyone."

Beyond employee absenteeism, an even more irritating problem for companies is presenteeism or the practice of employees coming to work despite injury, illness or anxiety, often resulting in reduced productivity and potentially making other employees sick. Presenteeism could cost companies as much as $150 billion a year and according to Harvard Business Review, studies estimate presenteeism to be between 20 and 60 percent of a given company's healthcare costs.

Whitthorne says a corporate supplement accountability program is the most underutilized strategy for keeping employees healthy and one of the most cost-effective approaches with the biggest return.

"Research shows that offering employees a daily omega-3 and vitamin D-3 supplement can measurably improve immunity and overall health," said Whitthorne. "With the Affordable Care Act picking up steam, most employees understand they must be more accountable for their own health and well-being so they are very receptive to being proactive with their health and taking supplements."

The cost of ACAP Health's corporate supplement accountability program to employers is less than $17 a month, per employee (averaging 57 cents a day), a stark contrast to the thousands of dollars that the ill employee may be costing the company. ACAP Health's program includes a "Lunch-and-Learn," delivered live or via webinar, along with a weekly video "healthcast." At the core of the program though is a nutritional supplement called 3-D Daily, providing each employee with 1,000 milligrams of purified omega-3 (EPA plus DHA) along with 2,000 IU of vitamin D-3 per day.

Whitthorne says the combination of vitamin D-3 and omega-3 stood out because of the proliferation of scientific studies showing significant health benefits coupled with the affordability of the supplements. Thousands of published studies show that vitamin D deficiency is related to an increased risk of poor immunity, heart disease, chronic pain, diabetes, arthritis, macular degeneration, multiple sclerosis, depression and at least 17 types of cancer. It is also reported that 77 percent of U.S. adolescents and adults are vitamin D deficient. There are now more than 25,000 published studies showing benefits of omega-3 for heart health, brain health, chronic inflammation, vision and autoimmune diseases.
