Statement by the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of International Museum Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 18, 2014) -

On this International Museum Day, I salute the efforts made by museums across the country to renew and reinvent ways to make their collections accessible to as many people as possible.

"Museum collections make connections" is the theme put forward this year by the International Council of Museums. Online content, travelling exhibitions, public engagement, and partnerships between institutions are all means to provide greater access to our heritage and our shared history.

I am especially pleased with the establishment of a pan-Canadian network of history museums, led by the Canadian Museum of History. This network will allow Canadians from coast to coast to coast to benefit from the collections safeguarded by museums across the country.

As we head toward Canada's 150th birthday in 2017, I encourage all Canadians to visit museums, to learn from them, and to reconnect with their history.
