Battelle Technologies Help U.S. Special Ops Get the Job Done in Sea, Air and on Land

Battelle to Display Bluefin-21 Robot, Armored Commercial Vehicle, Next Gen Bio-Detection System, Pen That Collects Chemical Vapors, and Oculus Rift Augmented Reality Training Goggles at SOFIC Conference

TAMPA, FL--(Marketwired - May 19, 2014) -  From unmanned vehicles that scour the ocean floor to a Google Glass app that helps identify hidden chemical dangers, Battelle, the world's leading independent R&D non-profit, will display these and other technologies at SOFIC (Special Operations Forces Industry Conference) in Tampa, Florida May 20-22.

Battelle has a long history of equipping Special Operations Forces with tools to help achieve mission success including tactical climbing equipment, maritime technologies and now is working as a technology integrator on the TALOS "Ironman" suit currently under development.

In addition, operators have long trusted Battelle to test the equipment and methods needed to protect deployed troops of all branches against the threat of hazardous materials and explosives.

Among the Battelle technologies being displayed are:

  • The Bluefin-21, an underwater robot designed and built by Battelle subsidiary, Bluefin Robotics. One of these vehicles is currently being used to search the ocean floor for the site of the missing Malaysian airplane.

  • Battelle's armored demonstrator Non-Standard Commercial Vehicle (NSCV) which is currently being manufactured for use by Special Operations Forces.

  • REBS™, a next gen smart technology chem-bio agent detector that eliminates reagents and costs less than a dollar per day to operate.

  • A chemical Vapor Sampling Pen model, a smaller pen-like version of a system currently in use to collect dangerous chemical vapors.

  • G-DataWave, a new wireless technology that is capable of transmitting over 10 gigabits of data.

  • Tactical Augmented Reality software for use with Google Glass to assist operators with chemical and biological information when encountering dangerous environments.

  • Virtual Reality Training Software using Oculus Rift.

  • HeatCoat™ active carbon nanotube anti-ice/deicer coating for use on UAVs and other aircraft.

For a hands-on demo of these technologies, visit booth 234 at SOFIC.
