One in Six British Students Would Volunteer Over Backpacking

In a recent survey, StudentUniverse found that if given £2,000 to travel, one in six students would spend it on altruistic activity.

LONDON, June 12, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, StudentUniverse announces the results of a recent survey that highlights that one in six British students would choose to spend a £2,000 travelling fund on volunteering. It is clear that volunteering has become a major trend amongst British students with 17% of respondents confirming they would volunteer, work in schools or help charities or animal sanctuaries with their work.

"We have seen great numbers of British students looking to take up our volunteering trips, which is a notable difference from current public perception. Increasingly, students are choosing to act altruistically for the long term benefits of experience and self-satisfaction, which is a hugely encouraging trend," said Dan Baker, Marketing Manager of StudentUniverse.

The survey also revealed a number of key motivators for why British students would choose to volunteer over a traditional backpacking or gap year trip:

Volunteering to become fully immersed in a new culture was a major influencer for a number of respondents, with it being recognised as a way to interact with different cultures and communities on a genuine level in their own environment.

Wanting to help those less fortunate was another reason cited as a reason to volunteer. It is evident that young people are becoming increasingly self-aware of their relative comfort and resolving to help those that need it.

Respondents were asked "What would you do if you won a £2,000 trip?" 5,251 students and young travellers responded to the survey.  Approximately 17% of respondents stated they would volunteer, teach, work in schools, help to build a school, work for an animal sanctuary or work for a charity with the trip.
