Government of Canada announces funding for the Heritage Wing in the Grand Marais Community Central

GRAND MARAIS, MANITOBA--(Marketwired - July 14, 2014) - Department of Canadian Heritage

The Government of Canada is providing financial support to the Rural Municipality of St. Clements for the renovation of the Heritage Wing in the Grand Marais Community Central.

James Bezan, Member of Parliament (Selkirk-Interlake), on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced $70,000 in funding for the project.

Quick Facts

  • The renovation of the Heritage Wing in the Grand Marais Community Central will include the construction of an acoustic ceiling, interior walls, new floors, display cases, and specialized cabinets. An electrical system and a security monitoring system will also be installed.
  • Exhibits in the new heritage centre will trace the natural and cultural history and development of the region and include the stories of:
    • the creation of Lake Winnipeg and its beaches;
    • life along the East Beaches in the early days involving the Métis, First Nations, and European immigrants;
    • the construction of the railway line to the beaches, the subsequent development of the resort, and the transformation from a resource-harvesting community to a tourism service industry; and
    • the evolution of the community following the construction of the highway, the loss of the railway, and the establishment of a provincial park.
  • Funding is provided through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage, which seeks to improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and arts presentation or exhibition. It is also designed to increase access for Canadians to performing arts, visual arts, media arts, museum collections, and heritage displays.
