Media Advisory/Welcome Home Event: Students on Ice 2014 Arctic Expedition

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - July 22, 2014) -

What: A celebration marking the return of participants for the 2014 Students on Ice (SOI) Arctic Expedition. Eighty-five students from Canada and 5 other countries (USA, UK, Monaco, Greenland and China) visited Labrador and Greenland by ship from July 12 to July 23. Students on Ice is an award-winning organization that brings students, aged 14-19, on educational expeditions to the Arctic and the Antarctic.
When: Thursday, July 24, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (remarks and presentations followed by interviews).
Where: Canadian Museum of Nature, 240 McLeod Street (at Metcalfe), Ottawa
Who: The team - which includes five local Ottawa students, as well as 34 northern aboriginal students from Canada and Greenland - were joined by scientists (two from the Canadian Museum of Nature), historians, artists, Inuit leaders, educators, and polar experts, as well as award-winning musicians Kathleen Edwards and Ian Tamblyn. They learned about the natural history, human history and environmental challenges of these Arctic regions.
Highlights included: sightings of iconic Arctic wildlife including polar bears, peregrine falcons and northern pilot whales; hikes through Torngat Mountains National Park, tour of the basecamp, and traditional celebration with Parks Canada and Inuit elders; visits to communities along the western coast of Greenland as well as explorations of spectacular glaciers, steep fjords, and waterfalls.
The Welcome Home event includes presentations of videos and photos from the expedition and the opportunity to hear stories and interview students who participated on the journey.
