Saint-Jean-Port-Joli Celebrates Music Inspired by Its Maritime Past

Government of Canada Supports the Fete des chants de marins


SAINT-JEAN-PORT-JOLI, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Aug. 16, 2014) - Department of Canadian Heritage

The Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced $7,600 in funding for the 16th Fête des chants de marins (Maritime Song Festival). This funding is being provided under the Local Festivals component of the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program.

The event, which showcases maritime culture in all its forms from the region and beyond, as well as the art and folklore of the St. Lawrence River, takes place this year from August 13 to 17 under the theme Porté par le fleuve (Carried by the River).

  • The festival will be organized by a crew of nearly 100 artists and 140 volunteers.
  • An expected 20,000 visitors can enjoy a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities: maritime songs, music, dancing, performances, conferences, boating and more.
  • Monique Miville-Deschênes, an author-songwriter-performer from Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, will be spokesperson for the festival's 16th edition.
