Frank Ancona Honda Shares Tire Pressure Monitoring Tips for Labor Day Travel

OLATHE, KS--(Marketwired - Aug 19, 2014) - During the rush of preparing for that Labor Day road trip, drivers can sometimes forget to keep an eye on their vehicles' tire pressure. Jason Heard, general manager at Frank Ancona Honda, offered some tire pressure monitoring tips to help keep both families and vehicles safe for Labor Day travel. Last year, AAA Travel reported that 34.1 million Americans traveled by car or vehicle.

According to Heard, from a safety standpoint, incorrect tire pressure can compromise braking, cornering and stability. "Tire pressure can also affect comfort, gas mileage and how long tires will last. If the pressure is too high, less of the tire will touch the road and can cause a decrease in ride comfort. It can also lead to traction issues from excessive bouncing. If tire pressure is too low, then too much of the tire will touch the road and cause uneven wearing and overheating," said Heard.

Tire pressure is also greatly affected by temperature changes, so it should be checked during each season, even if the tire does not appear to be leaking. According to cars.com outside temperatures can cause tire pressure to vary by as much as 1 psi per 10 degrees. That means the higher the temperatures, the higher psi readings. Tires should be checked first thing in the morning before going anywhere, once you have been behind the wheel for an extended amount of time, psi will rise.

Heard added that drivers should make sure they check all four tires. "Just because one is fine does not mean they all are. Additionally, use a gauge when checking pressure so you are accurate," he said.

Tire pressure recommendations can be found in the vehicle owner's manuals or on the driver's door pillar.
