Typesafe Puts Big Data to Work in Reactive Applications

Introduces "Reactive Application Development With Spark" Workshop

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 20, 2014) - Typesafe, provider of the world's leading Reactive platform and the company behind Play Framework, Akka, and Scala, today announced new initiatives to accelerate developer productivity in Reactive application development leveraging the power of Spark, the Big Data event-streaming (real-time) compute engine.

Typesafe is launching training and workshops for developers who want to apply Spark in creating Reactive Big Data applications.

"We're excited to be working with Typesafe as the leading experts in Scala and Akka, key technologies powering Spark," said Matei Zaharia, CTO at Databricks. "They enjoy a strong reputation within the developer community and understand how to build applications in the context of Big Data. Their expertise, developer roots and experience with Big Data are a combination that is critical to fostering the development of successful third party applications."

Apache Spark, developed originally at UC Berkeley's AMPLabs and written in Scala and leveraging Akka, provides a flexible infrastructure for in-memory, cluster computing that supports a wide range of applications, including machine learning, graph algorithms, batch-mode (offline) analytics and Reactive, event-driven systems.

"At Typesafe, we are continually evolving our content and programs to help developers build Reactive applications on the JVM," said Jonas Bonér, CTO and co-founder of Typesafe. "We have a vibrant developer ecosystem that has been asking for best practices on how to leverage Big Data technologies. We believe our users will find tremendous value in this new Spark offering."

Companies across all industries have been turning to Typesafe to build Reactive applications, of which Big Data is a core component.

After completely overhauling its existing client side architecture with the Typesafe Reactive Platform [read the case study], Tomax recently tapped Typesafe for advice on how best to introduce the power of Spark into their POS and in-store computing system that services more than 100 retail chains with more than 25,000 storefronts, and millions of customers and store associates.

"We partnered with Typesafe to transform our application platform into something modular and Reactive that could allow us to innovate more quickly," said Kathryn Murphy, vice president of product management at Tomax. "Now, their expert advice has helped us arrive at a strategy for balancing the needs for real-time queries, complex reporting, and retailer accessibility in our Reactive retail system to help us improve performance while maintaining service level agreements within our operating budget."
