InLocation Alliance Delivers System Architecture White Paper

PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwired - Sep 9, 2014) - The InLocation Alliance (ILA) today announced the publication of the group's System Architecture White Paper version 1.0, its first external publication. The white paper defines a technology-independent architecture for indoor positioning that ensures support for use cases identified as critical for commercial success and lays the foundation for interoperability among vendor contributions.

"The whitepaper from the System Architecture group of the ILA specifies the main components and interface requirements of a technology-independent system architecture for indoor location. A common industry view on the system architecture creates a foundation for interoperability between vendors that will help accelerate the market for indoor positioning services," said Jouni Kämäräinen, Chair of ILA.

The ILA system architecture has been designed to support a range of venues from the very small (e.g., stand-alone business, etc.) to the very large (e.g. a corporate campus, university, sports arena, transit hub, etc.) to the very distributed (e.g. a worldwide retail chain). It defines the elements required to deliver an indoor positioning implementation and the interfaces between those elements. These elements may be delivered by a single product or delivered as separate products by specialized vendors. The ILA recognises the need to ensure that indoor positioning solutions are able to address security and privacy requirements and support for security and privacy are included in the architecture.

The current version of the white paper focuses on solutions using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It provides a complete architectural description of an indoor positioning solution and elaborates the requirements for the first three of the defined interfaces. Future versions of the architecture shall adapt to support the evolving market requirements and the lessons learned from actual deployments. The ILA will continue to work with standard development organisations to create open interface specifications for the remaining interfaces.
