EMC Publishing Unveils New Immersive Spanish Education Program for the 21st Century Student

ST. PAUL, MN--(Marketwired - Sep 16, 2014) -  EMC Publishing, a leader in print and online educational programs and a division of New Mountain Learning, announced the launch of its new immersive Spanish language proficiency program, ¡Qué chévere!. The new series, which offers five levels of Spanish instruction for middle school through high school students is available in print and digital format. It continues EMC Publishing's mission to increase world language fluency for the 21st century student.

Building on the success of EMC Publishing's French language program T'es branché?, ¡Qué chévere! was developed from extensive research assessing the needs of today's Spanish teachers and it conforms to American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards. The new Spanish program will be available in a digital format in EMC Publishing's Passport® learning environment, which marries traditional textbook learning with innovative online components. Passport includes a multimedia cultural immersion platform as well as video-based collaboration and oral assessment tools which can be used for assessments. Through this environment, students engage with the language via meaningful, context-driven lessons and activities. Students can also immerse themselves in the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world through continuously updated content, such as current events and popular media, encouraging a deeper relationship with the language.

"Students go through years of Spanish classes, many from middle school through high school, only to graduate without the ability to have a conversation in Spanish," said Kristin Hoffman, Spanish editor, EMC Publishing. "Learning the language and culture in a meaningful way requires more than memorizing hundreds of vocabulary terms and verb conjugations. With the help of Spanish language instructors, we developed ¡Qué chévere! to engage students and make learning Spanish relevant."

The ¡Qué chévere! program offers differentiated instruction, providing both basic and advanced materials to effectively meet the needs of students at different levels within the same classroom. When utilized within the Passport environment, EMC's ¡Qué chévere! curriculum delivers personalized instruction and video-based collaboration and assessment tools which increase language proficiency and drive student outcomes.
