Mercy Hospital St. Louis Focuses on Low Dose for Pediatric Patients With Viztek DR Solution

Large Health Care System Installs Four Viztek U-Arms and Dose Conscious Capabilities

RALEIGH, NC--(Marketwired - Sep 25, 2014) - Viztek, the leading provider of complete digital software and hardware diagnostic imaging solutions, today announced that Mercy Hospital St. Louis, in St. Louis, Missouri, has selected the company's Ultra U-Arm DR systems for implementation at four of its outpatient facilities as well as one at its Spine Center in the hospital. The combination of the systems advanced technology to lower the dose, along with its innovative design and ability to enhance workflow made the system the ideal choice.

So far installed in four of the 13 Mercy outpatient facilities in the St. Louis area, as well as the Spine Center, the Viztek Ultra U-Arm DR comes with the Pediatric Imaging Package, ideal for any facility that is dose conscious and working to align with the goals and recommendations of the American College of Radiology's (ACR's) Image Gently initiative. The system alerts the technologist about the necessary steps to take in order to reduce dose during pediatric exams, while the use of the cesium iodide (CsI) detector enables excellent image quality at lower doses. Mercy sees the system as a competitive advantage, enabling them to provide peace of mind to parents, that the facility has measures in place to help enable the lowest possible dose.

"Mercy Hospital and Mercy Children's Hospital strive to 'care for people, not illnesses' and this is exactly what we are doing with this technology," said Kevin Huskey, B.A., RT (R) (MR) Director Outpatient Imaging Services. "At our outpatient facilities our goal is to provide our patients with low dose, high quality imaging in a comfortable environment."

In addition to the dose capabilities, Viztek's U-Arm design, which is user-friendly and allows for easy positioning of patients, was immediately accepted by the Mercy technologists due to the enhanced workflow and flexibility provided by the system. The design enables technologists to move patients through more quickly and comfortably, which is especially important for older and less mobile patients. Image processing time is also faster, expediting image review so patient wait time is decreased while still assuring high resolution for a confident diagnosis.

"With ongoing developments in hardware and software technology, we will continue to offer aid in the effort to reduce radiation dose in pediatric as well as adult imaging," said Bruce Ashby, General Manager, Viztek. "While we are currently installed in four of the outpatient imaging facilities and the Spine Center at Mercy, we hope to work with the hospital as they move all of the facilities to the most advanced digital DR technology, avoiding time consuming demands of CR use."
