VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Sept. 25, 2014) -

For more than 30 years, the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) has delighted and entertained audiences by offering compelling, high-quality cinema. I am particularly pleased that, every year, the Festival offers an exciting array of genres, which demonstrates Canadian excellence in filmmaking. Our country is privileged to have an abundance of creative artists who bring our unique Canadian perspective on life to people at home and abroad.

Since being established in 1982, VIFF has become one of the five largest film festivals in North America, and it continues to grow in popularity every year. In addition to its wide range of feature films, VIFF is the largest exhibition of new Canadian cinema in the world and also presents one of the most prolific selections of East Asian films outside of that region.

The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of Canada's creative industries. Every year, our Government invests more than $600 million in our audiovisual sector through Telefilm Canada, the National Film Board of Canada, the Canada Media Fund and tax credits.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to commend VIFF on its ongoing efforts to offer audiences a curated program of local and international cinema, while promoting the important work of Canadian filmmakers. I wish you every success at this year's Festival.
