PATTISON Onestop and Labspace Studio present, The Things We Lose, a new project created by Toronto artists John Loerchner and Laura Mendes specifically for the PATTISON Onestop network of Toronto subway platform screens. The Things We Lose, a collection of 30-second videos, will play from October 1 to October 31, 2014, accompanied by a handful of The Things We Lose stories on large-format posters across the subway system.

The Things We Lose is the third in a series of public art projects driven by public contributions and inspired by the stories we don't often share. This year, Loerchner and Mendes have gathered a collection of "Lost & Found" clips offered by various strangers exploring the themes of loss, hope and letting go. To watch the trailer -

"I lost my first love in 1961. Gladys...if you're out there, know that I've thought of you often over the years and hoped your life was treating you well." (David, Age 78).

"I lost my memories… 8 years worth of photos of my children growing up. It's crazy how much of our lives we hold captive on our devices." (Alam, Age 48).

The Things We Lose repertoire includes pleas from long lost lovers, lost memory cards, lost wedding rings and children's toys. These intimate videos will appear as subtitled clips every 10 minutes on PATTISON Onestop subway platform screens across the city, capturing the attention of more than 1.3 million daily Toronto subway commuters. Additionally, 70 large-format posters of The Things We Lose salted throughout the TTC subway system offer commuters a quick glimpse of objects from the "Lost & Found" video album.

"What more appropriate place to explore the theme of loss than in the TTC," comments John Loerchner, Co-Director of Labspace Studio. "We lose things every minute of every day in big cities; especially in transit. We're constantly on the go, and things inevitably fall out of our lives when we're on the move."

The Things We Lose videos were created by Loerchner and Mendes by scouring Craigslist, lost and found forums, contacting and meeting select individuals, and solicited submissions from the public.

"For us, the goal isn't necessarily to reunite people with their lost things, but rather to give people the opportunity to make peace with their losses," says Laura Mendes, Co-Director of Labspace Studio. "The project is as much about letting go as it is about finding."

Previous Labspace Studio projects include the controversial and highly buzzed initiative, Confessions Underground (2013), followed by the insightful project, Advice for the Living (2014).

The Things We Lose is part of Art in Transit, PATTISON Onestop's year-long arts and culture programme, presenting thought-provoking projects that enhance our shared environment and transport city-dwellers, if only momentarily, out of our daily routines.
