Wellcome Trust Selects Aconex for Wellcome Collection Development Project

Aconex Platform Supports Refurbishment of Free Visitor Destination for the Incurably Curious

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - Oct 21, 2014) - Aconex, provider of a leading cloud collaboration platform for the global construction industry, has been selected by the Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in health, for its Wellcome Collection Development Project.

Established in 1936, the Wellcome Trust is now the world's largest independent charitable foundation funding research in human and animal health. Wellcome Collection, its public visitor destination, explores the connections between medicine, life and art in the past, present and future. The venue offers visitors contemporary and historic exhibitions and collections, lively public events, the world-renowned Wellcome Library, a café, a bookshop, and conference facilities.

The Wellcome Collection Development Project, valued at £17.5 million, focuses on the reconfiguration and refurbishment of the Wellcome Building constructed in 1932. This will accommodate a significant increase in traffic from the 100,000 visitors anticipated when the venue opened in 2006 and the half a million currently visiting each year. The new multi-use space is expected to be completed in early 2015.

Aconex Improves Efficiency, Reduces Risk throughout Project Lifecycle

"We insisted on using Aconex to maintain full control of the project," said Construction Director Chris Bunker of the Wellcome Trust. "Aconex solutions have been instrumental in increasing accountability and managing change across all of the participants. The quality standards and public expectations of this project are exceptionally high, and Aconex has helped us consistently meet them."

The Wellcome Collection Development Project started in 2012 with a design competition won by Wilkinson Eyre Architects. After successfully deploying Aconex to manage pre-construction information and processes, including design reviews, the Wellcome Trust is now using the online collaboration platform for tendering, document control, and workflow management, and Aconex Field for field inspections and issues management. With Aconex Mobile construction apps on tablets and smartphones, the project team can quickly and accurately enter data and attach photos in real time, improving efficiency and reducing risk.

The project team consists of more than 130 individuals from over 30 different organizations. Aconex is a neutral platform, independent of any organization, which gives team members immediate access to project information, correspondence and the most current version of documents, which are securely and permanently stored in the cloud. Workflows defined by Wellcome Trust keep the entire team's activities synchronized. Also, the Wellcome Trust has a complete audit trail that tracks all project communications, decisions and changes for early resolution of conflicts.

"The Wellcome Trust's mission is vitally important, and Wellcome Collection is a unique public asset," said Henry Jones, senior vice president of Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and Global Accounts. "We are proud that they have entrusted project information and process management to Aconex. We look forward to helping the Wellcome Trust deliver the project successfully."
