Durrie Vision Involved in FDA LASIK Study

FDA Report Reveals Positive Outcomes and Confirms Safety and Effectiveness of LASIK Procedures

OVERLAND PARK, KS--(Marketwired - Oct 28, 2014) - Durrie Vision, a Kansas City-based eye surgery center, served as one of five sites in a comprehensive study conducted by the Federal Drug Administration. The study was part of the LASIK Quality of Life Collaboration Project (LQOLCP) directed by the FDA, the National Eye Institute, and the Department of Defense.

Led by Dr. Daniel Durrie and Dr. Jason Stahl, Durrie Vision has a long history of leading and supporting research within the industry and was especially privileged to be a part of a study exclusively focused on patient safety, outcomes and satisfaction. Dr. Stahl notes, "For over 20 years, Durrie Vision has been committed to putting research into practice to improve patient outcomes. This particular study confirms previous findings that laser vision correction is both a safe and effective treatment for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism."

Preliminary results from the study were released during the 2014 American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting and revealed overwhelmingly positive outcomes. Tracking and analyzing patient-reported symptoms from preoperative testing through 3-month postoperative visits, key findings from the study include:

  • Over 95% of the survey respondents achieved 20/20 or better visual acuity
  • The prevalence of symptoms such as glare, starburst, halos, and ghosting did not increase postoperatively after LASIK
  • More than 96% of subjects reported being satisfied with their vision after three months

Dr. Durrie served as an investigator in the study and was pleased with the FDA report. "The key positives in the study were that it showed the procedure was extremely safe and that ghosting, glare, halos and starburst went down after surgery. Overall, patients experienced improved symptoms after surgery and an extremely high satisfaction rate."
