Mediacurrent Launches Weather.com on Drupal

One of the Most Trafficked Websites in the World Teams-up with Mediacurrent to Launch Weather.com

ATLANTA, Nov. 20, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - Mediacurrent, a leading Drupal and digital web agency today announced that Weather.com has launched on Drupal -- an open source content management system (CMS). The Weather Company (TWC) first teamed with Mediacurrent to fully migrate from Percussion, a proprietary-based CMS, to Drupal. With its launch, Weather.com is the highest trafficked Drupal site in existence, boasting over a billion page views per month.

"The launch of Weather.com on Drupal is revolutionary. This launch represents the ultimate validation around how open source software is becoming the de facto standard for enterprise organizations that desire flexibility, innovation, and cost savings. Weather.com is already pushing Drupal to new standards and better performance. Mediacurrent is proud of our strategic partnership with The Weather Company, and we look forward to our continued collaboration," said Mediacurrent Partner, Dave Terry.

To identify a new CMS, Weather.com spent about a year doing a significant amount of due diligence, ruling out licensed-based systems such as Adobe CQ and SDL Tridion. Weather.com did not want to be held hostage to a 5-year product roadmap or be highly vendor dependent. This ruled out closed-source code options. Drupal became the top choice for its ease of use, flexibility, and speed in which it allowed users--even non-technically savvy ones--to publish new content.

Weather.com has worked with Mediacurrent and Boston-based Acquia for the past 18 months to create its content delivery system and complete its migration to Drupal. Weather.com relies on the Acquia Platform to accelerate its deployment and reduce costs.

"Weather.com is serving millions of pages to more than 100 million people each month," said Dries Buytaert, Acquia CTO and Drupal project creator. "Weather's move to Drupal shows how complex, content-rich sites benefit from an open, agile platform to deliver an amazing experience for every site visitor."
