Padtec Optical SDN Controlled Directionless ROADM Demonstration at Supercomputing Conference 2014

Innovative Technology Is an Integral Part of Padtec's Growing Portfolio of Optical Solutions

NEW ORLEANS, LA--(Marketwired - Nov 24, 2014) - Padtec, a global manufacturer and solutions provider of turnkey optical solutions, announced today its participation in the Supercomputing Conference 2014 (SC14) in New Orleans, LA. SC14 brings together the most respected minds in high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis to debut the research and innovation that will open the door to new scientific and economic opportunities.

Padtec showcased its state-of-the-art Directionless Reconfigurable Optical Add and Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) and developments in Software Defined Networks (SDN). The network architecture deployed at SC14 highlights Padtec's efforts, not only in participating in, but advancing the state of open Software Defined Networks (SDN) control environments. The three node directionless ROADM network interworked with an Application Programming Interface (API), which managed 100Gb/s coherent wavelength turn-up and directional control on the system.

"We are proud and excited to have demonstrated this technology at SC14," said Padtec CEO Jorge Salomao Pereira. "This demo shows our commitment to being on the forefront, providing technically sound solutions that enable additional degrees of flexibility and control to operators desiring to implement the intelligence an SDN environment lends to DWDM optical networks."

Padtec participated in the Intelligent Software Driven Dynamic Hybrid Networks With Terabit/sec Science Data Flows demonstration by allowing a controller developed jointly by UNICAMP, a university in Campinas, Brazil, UNESP, the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Caltech High Energy Physics and CERN to control its optical ROADM via its REST interface during the conference.

Harvey Newman of Caltech, Professor of Physics and head of the SC14 team, stated: "Padtec ROADMs and software behaved perfectly. Its ROADM and 100Gb/s transponders not only allowed an astounding 1Tb/s of data to flow during SC14 but also demonstrated how an external third party OpenDaylight (ODL) controller can be used to reconfigure topology on demand and provision the individual network components."

The 100Gbp/s line cards and all relevant ROADM hardware used in the demo are generally available as part of Padtec's LightPad Platform, which offers a carrier-class solution for multi-service transport with high capacity in several network architectures.
