BACKGROUNDER

Fabricland: In the past 43 years Fabricland has grown from one small store in Toronto's west end into Canada's Largest Fashion Fabric Distributor, with over 120 stores from coast to coast across Canada. Today Fabricland carries the basics, including couturier silks, woolens, designer fabrics, cottons and blends, as well as notions, patterns and accessories and the largest selection of fabrics possible, including drapery and upholstery fabrics.

To address the issue of a decline in the sewing population, as well as the general trend towards easy and affordable no-sew decorating options, Fabricland launched their ever-growing collection of No-Sew, Ready-to-Go Home Decor, with ready-to-hang drapery panels, white bedding, bed-in-a-bag sets, an expansive line of drapery hardware, table linen as well as a huge selection of decorative home accessories and much, much more.

PrairieWest Centre: with attracting Fabricland as an anchor tenant to what was then a run-down, shoddy, worn-out, beat-up industrial building (and that is being kind), the developer W. Brett Wilson's Prairie Merchant Corporation - along with local contractor Compass Developments lead by Gary Tebbutt with the very capable team of Brian Chomyzsyn and Shaun Tourigny - undertook a extensive multi-million dollar complete re-build of the building and site - providing almost 40,000 square feet of essentially brand new first class retail and service commercial real estate fronting onto Highway 97. Units available immediately for lease range in size from 1,200 square to 20,000 +. These units offer excellent visibility, highway pylon signage opportunities, ample parking and flexible layout options. Huge kudos to all involved - from project permitting to construction trades - but special thanks to Wendy Rempel of Blue Green Architecture for vision and tenacity in this dream and to West Kelowna for the extensive upgrades to the Westlake Road site access.

W. Brett Wilson: well known for his role as the lead deal-making Dragon for three seasons on the Gemini Award-winning CBC television show, Dragons' Den - thus the term coined for ex-Dragons - Dragon Emeritus. He is Chairman of Canoe Financial, a privately owned investment management firm and Chairman of his wholly owned Prairie Merchant Corporation, a private merchant bank focused on business opportunities in the energy, agriculture, real estate, sports, and entertainment industries. In 1993, he co-founded FirstEnergy Capital Corp, the leading focused brokerage firm providing investment-banking services to Canada's energy sector. He has been investing extensively in real estate projects in and around Kelowna for the last six years including one of Canada's largest fitness complexes - Global Fitness & Racquet Centre - on Harvey.
