The D5500 is a DX-format DSLR featuring a 24.2MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor, which combine to enable full HD 1080p video recording, 5 fps shooting, and sensitivity to ISO 25600. The monocoque body design of the D5500 has been trimmed for a more compact and lighter weight profile, yet still includes a large 3.2" 1.037m-dot vari-angle LCD, with a new touchscreen interface for intuitive navigation and shooting control. Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity lends an enhanced air of connectivity and control, and other updated features include time-lapse shooting with in-camera exposure smoothing, the Flat Picture Control profile for enhanced color grading, and enhanced battery life to achieve 820 shots per charge. Besides being available as a body only, in Black or Red, the D5500 is also available in kits with either an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens or an 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

For the FX-format telephoto shooter, Nikon's new AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR improves upon its predecessor with a significant reduction in weight and size, as well as an updated optical design with newly developed lens technologies. One Phase Fresnel element works to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations and distortions, and an extra-low dispersion element assists in producing notable image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity. A Nano Crystal Coat helps to suppress surface reflections and lens flare while a fluorine coating protects the front element from dust, dirt, and moisture. Complementing the optical attributes, a 4.5-stop-effective VR image stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake and an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism maintains consistent exposures when shooting at high frame rates.

Finally, Nikon's announcement also sees the introduction of the DX-dedicated AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II lens; a telephoto zoom providing an 82.5-300mm equivalent focal-length range. The updated design of this lens features a new retractable profile and 4-stop-effective VR system to aid handheld shooting in dim lighting conditions. Extra-low dispersion glass and a Super Integrated Coating maintain image clarity and color accuracy and a Silent Wave Motor provides smooth and quiet focusing performance.
