Carbon Sciences and Leading Graphene Expert Launch New Venture

Dr. Kaustav Banerjee Is the Founder and Will Serve as Chief Technology Officer of Transphene, Inc., a New Graphene Venture Jointly Owned With Carbon Sciences

SANTA BARBARA, CA--(Marketwired - Jan 7, 2015) - Carbon Sciences Inc. (OTCBB: CABN), focused on the development of a breakthrough technology to mass-produce graphene, the new miracle material, today announced that the company and Dr. Kaustav Banerjee have jointly launched Transphene, Inc., a new graphene venture.

Dr. Banerjee, a leading expert in the field, currently leads a research project at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), sponsored by Carbon Sciences, to develop a new and scalable graphene synthesis technology. He will serve as Chief Technology Officer of Transphene, Inc.

"We are very excited about our new venture with Dr. Banerjee," said Bill Beifuss, Carbon Sciences' CEO. "Transphene, Inc. will concentrate on the commercial development of a breakthrough technology to mass-produce graphene, and will hold certain intellectual property required to protect these assets in the commercial marketplace."

Graphene, a sheet of pure carbon that is only one atom thick, is flexible, transparent, impermeable to moisture, stronger than diamonds and more conductive than gold. Experts believe graphene to be the miracle material that will enable revolutionary applications such as bendable touch screen displays, rapid charge batteries, super-capacitors, low cost solar cells, extreme high-speed semiconductors, biosensors, as well as water purification.

"Graphene is truly a revolutionary material," said Dr. Banerjee. "Now that we understand its properties, the new challenge is to find a low cost way to mass produce it. Our approach at Transphene is to fine-tune the manufacturing process to match specific applications. We plan to initially target those applications that will most likely find early commercial success."

About Dr. Kaustav Banerjee

Dr. Kaustav Banerjee is internationally recognized as a visionary and a leading innovator in the field of nanoelectronics. Since 2002, he has been a faculty member at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he is currently a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Nanoelectronics Research Lab. His current research focuses on the physics, technology and applications of low-dimensional materials such as graphene and other 2D materials for next-generation green electronics, photonics and bioelectronics. Initially trained as a physicist, he received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1999. Dr. Banerjee has received numerous awards and honors for his work including the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award, presented to him in 2011 by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, to recognize his outstanding contributions to nanoelectronics. He is a Fellow of IEEE and the American Physical Society, and a recipient of the 2015 IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award for his contributions to "nano-materials, devices, circuits, and CAD, enabling low-power and low-cost electronics". About Carbon Sciences, Inc.

Carbon Sciences is focused on the development of a breakthrough technology to mass-produce graphene, the new miracle material. Graphene, a sheet of pure carbon that is only one atom thick, is flexible, transparent, impermeable to moisture, stronger than diamonds and more conductive than gold. Ever since the Nobel Prize was awarded for its discovery, experts believe graphene to be the miracle material that will enable revolutionary applications such as bendable touchscreen displays, rapid charge batteries, super-capacitors, low cost solar cells, extreme high-speed semiconductors, biosensors, as well as water purification. While the raw materials to make graphene are readily available, the lack of an industrial scale manufacturing process has hindered its commercial use. Carbon Sciences has targeted the development of a breakthrough process that will transform natural gas into commercial size sheets of graphene that can be fine-tuned with application-specific electrical and materials properties.
