NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Jan 28, 2015) - Eighty percent of marketing departments will increase their digital marketing budgets in the next 12-18 months, reported Mondo, a technology and digital marketing resourcing provider. Mondo also predicts that by 2016, 50 percent of all marketing hires will have a technical background, a marked change from the skill sets of traditional marketing professionals today.

According to Mondo's new report, "The Future of Digital Marketing," the following technical skills will be in the highest demand for marketing department hires in the next 12-18 months:

*Digital/Social: 54%
*Content Creation: 44%
*Big Data/Analytics: 33%
*Mobile Strategy: 30%
*Search/SEO: 28%

The focus on particular digital marketing channels is also changing. According to the Mondo survey, while 59% of respondents indicated that email is the most valuable channel in driving customer engagement today, that will drop to 55% in the next 3-5 years, and will be overtaken by mobile and video. In addition, the study reported on these top marketing channel trends and anticipated use in the next three to five years.

*Mobile: 24% current and 70% in the future (next 3-5 years)
*Video: 13% currently and 61% in the future (next 3-5 years)
*Social: 38% currently and 49% in the future (next 3-5 years)

At the same time, the makeup of the future digital marketing workforce will change from today's workforce of primarily permanent, full-time workers to more freelancer workers. Mondo predicts a shift to a 50/50 mix of one to one freelance to permanent workers.

"The new digital era requires marketing departments to be more forward-thinking, prepare for the demand, and equip themselves with agile employees with the right skills," said Laura McGarrity, Vice President of Digital Marketing Strategy, Mondo. "In fact, 72% of respondents to our survey reported that the traditional marketing model is no longer sufficient in regards to the ever-changing world of digital marketing."

In addition, Mondo reported that marketers allocate an average of one third of their budgets to social and digital marketing. Marketing technology budgets will surpass IT technology budgets in 2017.
