GainSpan Expands Line of Wi-Fi Drivers to Support Linux

Initial implementation uses SDIO with Freescale i.MX6 Smart platform; can be easily ported to many Linux and Android platforms

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 24, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Embedded World 2015, Nuremberg, Germany – In order to meet the needs of customers developing Linux-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications, GainSpan® Corporation announced it has expanded its line of Wi-Fi drivers to support the Linux operating system. The new Linux SDIO drivers and reference examples have been validated on a Freescale i.MX6 Sabre-lite Smart platform, but can be easily ported to many other Linux or Android hardware platforms.

The release of the new drivers extends GainSpan's portfolio of driver software and reference code in support of other Freescale MCUs/MPUs, as well as those from Renesas, NXP, and other popular MCUs.

"With the explosion of the Internet of Things, a wide variety of MCUs/MPUs are now being used as the engines for embedded devices. We are seeing growing interest in the use of our solutions for high-end IoT devices using Linux," said Bernard Aboussouan, vice president of marketing, GainSpan. "Now our customers using Linux can easily add GainSpan Wi-Fi connectivity."

The new reference drivers support any of GainSpan's latest generation GS2000 family of Wi-Fi modules. These fully-certified modules are based on the GainSpan GS2000 dual mode Wi-Fi® (802.11b/g/n) and (802.15.4) SoC, and provide a variety of features requested by customers for IoT devices such as low-power, high throughput, concurrent mode and meshing.

The Linux SDIO IP2WiFi Driver provides a low-cost, simple Wi-Fi solution for devices that run the Linux operating system and a TCP/IP stack, with the Wi-Fi MAC and connection management tasks offloaded to the GS2000M module, alleviating the host from these tasks and allowing the host to spend more time sleeping when there is no IP traffic between it and the network. The Linux SDIO Serial2WiFi Driver is a solution that runs the full TCP/IP networking stack on the GS2000M module.
