Orange County Plastic Surgeon Provides Insight on Upgrading One's Breast Implants

Daniel Mills, MD of the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute Highlights Breast Implant Upgrade and Explains Why All Breast Augmentation Patients With Implants Should Eventually Consider the Procedure

LAGUNA BEACH, CA--(Marketwired - Mar 17, 2015) - Breast augmentation with implants continues to be one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed each year, states Dr. Daniel Mills, a board certified plastic surgeon in Orange County. Though the majority of patients are extremely happy with their results, he notes that some individuals desire to exchange their breast implants over time for a variety of different reasons. To help these women achieve their specific goals, Dr. Mills offers breast implant upgrade at his practice, the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute.

According to the Orange County plastic surgeon, some of the most common reasons patients request a breast implant upgrade are:

  • They wish to increase or decrease the size of their implants
  • They want to switch from saline implants to silicone implants
  • They desire to switch from silicone implants to saline implants
  • They need to replace an implant that is leaking and/or ruptured
  • They want to be proactive about changing their implants before a leak/rupture occurs

Regardless of the reason for wanting to exchange one's implants, Dr. Mills says the procedure for breast implant upgrade is generally performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient surgery, and the operation is often not as lengthy as the initial breast augmentation may have been. "Using the same incision point from your original surgery," he explains, "your current breast implants can be removed and replaced with the desired new implants, therefore decreasing the chance of any additional scarring."

In regard to recovery from the implant upgrade procedure, Dr. Mills notes that a compression garment will generally need to be worn for a short period of time to help protect the breasts as they heal. Additionally, some temporary bruising and swelling is common, and any potential discomfort can often be managed with pain medication. Most patients can expect to return to their normal routines within a few days, he adds, though heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided for a minimum of four weeks.

Ultimately, Dr. Mills stresses that upgrading one's implants is something every breast augmentation patient should consider eventually, as the average life-expectancy for implants is approximately 10 to 15 years before the risk of rupture increases dramatically. "[Implant exchange] can not only help prevent complications like capsular contracture that may result from a leak or rupture, but being proactive about changing your implants can also lead to an easier upgrade procedure and faster recovery."
