As Silicon Valley Bank recently reported in their State of the Wine Industry 2015, "After finishing the year at the top end of our predicted growth in sales of 6-10 percent, we are predicting a breakout year of growth in the fine wine category in the 14-18 percent range in 2015."
As well, in regards to online wine sales, Paul Mabray, CEO of wine tech company, VinTank, says, "Another area that has seen major growth is Internet sales…Wine sales online increased 44 percent in 2013 from the previous year," he said. Part of that is because of looser alcohol shipping laws, but Mabray attributes most of it to the recession. During that time wineries, fearful of losing in-person sales, scrambled to put up online stores.
Mabray said that never before has the industry been able to measure the public's interest in wine like it can in the digital age.
"What we've found is that it's one of the most discussed consumable products," he said. "There are 1.5 million to 2 million conversations a day about wine on social media. No one on social media is saying, 'I love my Dove soap bar in the shower in the morning.'"
