TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 19, 2015) - Department of Canadian Heritage

The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced $70,000 in support for Karate Canada, through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, to host the XXIX Senior Pan American Karate Championships.

The event is taking place from March 18 to 21, 2015, at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto.

Quick Facts

  • This competition is the last important stage of preparation for Canadian karate athletes before the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.
  • Hosting these championships will provide Canadian athletes with an opportunity to compete at home against the highest level of competition.
  • Karate Canada is also able to enhance the development of Canadian high-performance athletes, coaches, and officials by hosting this event.
  • In the 2014-2015 fiscal year, Sport Canada is contributing up to $326,500 to Karate Canada through the Sport Support Program to support the delivery and development of karate in Canada.
  • From March 2014 to February 2015, Sport Canada provided over $68,400 through the Athlete Assistance Program to support five members of the Canadian karate team with training expenses to help them focus on their pursuit of excellence.
  • Karate Canada is the national governing body for the sport of karate in this country.
